Best Pick- Geovany Soto- The Nuts picked Soto after a breakout season where he hit 26 HR’s and batted over 350 in AAA. The season seemingly came out of nowhere since he had failed to hit over 10 HR’s in any previous minor league season. The Nuts gambled that the season wasn’t a fluke and were rewarded with a strong rookie season where he hit 23 HR’s, batted over 280 and won the ROY award for the National League. All this success failed to carry over to this past season where Soto was a massive disappointment. He lit it up more off the field (tested positive for marijuana) than on it (12 HR’s) and has a lot of question marks going into the 2010 season. While Soto will likely be replaced as Best Pick in the future, he has clearly been the most successful MLB player for the second round to date.
Worst Pick- J.R. Towles- Lester with a bad prospect pick? What? Is anyone surprised? Picked directly after Soto with the 9th selection, most of the league did not think that Towles was a top prospect. In his time in the minors he failed to show any star potential and only hit for moderate power. The only reason Towles was ranked as a #1 prospect is because he is part of the consistently bad Astros farm system. Nevertheless Lester drafted him in the 2nd round only to have to release him at the end of the season after he lost his prospect eligibility. Whomp whoooomp.
Still Could Make it- Desmond Jennings- All Jennings need’s in an opportunity. A consensus top 10 prospect on any possible list, Jennings is commonly compared to Carl Crawford due to his great speed and ability to hit for a high average. He should make an instant impact in the MLB and fantasy once he arrives. Witnessing the luck of The Brad also leads me to think that Jennings will probably do five times better than is predicted – which is exactly what all 11 other NKFBL teams fear.
% in MLB- 8 out of 12 with two more coming in 2010.
