Best Pick- Kyle Blanks- Brad picked Blanks down at the bottom of the 2nd round and unlike anyone else picked in round 2 of 2009 Blanks paid immediate dividends. Looked at as a big bodied, power potential slugger at 6'6 285 with Adrian Gonzalez blocking his way to the majors a lot of teams in the NKFBL passed him up. Blanks was moved to the outfield and looked very impressive in his rookie year posting 10 HR in only 148 AB's in the spacious PETCO Park before an injury ended his season. I still see him as a 1st baseman long term which will only increase his value but no matter which position Blanks is playing he'll be hitting dingers. Like most young hitter Blanks will have to improve his BB/K ratio (15/55), but either way he looks like a very good pick for the Brew Crew in last year's 2nd round.
Worst Pick- Greg Halman- Halman came out of no where to be the Mariners 1st ranked prospect going into last season and he backed it up with a very disappointing season in AAA hitting .219 and striking out 181 times in 120 AB's. He did manage to put up 25 home runs and 72 RBI but at this point in his career he looks more like a Jack Cust than a potential superstar. Halman is still only 22 and has plenty of time to right the ship, but 1 year out he looks like worst pick of the 2nd round in 2009.
Still Could Make it- Derek Holland- Sully picked the highly touted Holland with the #4 pick in the 2nd round of 09 and shortly thereafter Holland was pitching in the big leagers. The historically pitching starved Rangers rushed up the prospect and what Sully got out of it was a very inconsistent 2009, as is usually the case with young hurlers. Holland ended the season with some awful numbers (6.12 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 8-13 record) but the young lefty did put up 107 K's in 138 innings and showed flashes of greatness (Complete game shutout with 8 K's vs the Angles in August). The verdict is still out there on Holland who will play the whole 2010 season at 23 years of age, but I think he'll turn out to be a solid big league pitcher at worst.% in the MLB- 3 out of 12= 25%, its still very early on this crop so that number should get a lot higher shortly
