Best Pick- Trevor Cahill?- probably the worst best pick yet, Cahill is someone who would usually have a shot at the “Still could make it label” but out of the 2008 5th round he’s the best we’ve got. Don’t get me wrong at 21 years of age Cahill has a lot of promise and upside, but as a rookie last year he put up an ERA on the wrong side of 4.5 and a whip of 1.44 with only 90 K in 178 innings. It’s safe to say he was in a bit over his head having only pitched 37 innings about A ball prior to last season. In time he should develop into a minimal damage control type pitcher and although he probably will never rack up the K’s he should be able to be very effective in that ballpark.
Worst Pick- Shelley Duncan- Shelley Duncan told some good stories about him and his brother when I worked at in the Pawsox Clubhouse but other than putting up big homer totals in AAA he’s not worth anything. He is your classic 4A player, real good for AAA but not good enough for the Majors. What made this pick the worst of the round is that everyone already knew that about him and Sully picked him anyways. If you read this Sully can you explain your research for the prospect drafts? It seems to be to pick the people that have no shot, are from Rhode Island or played for URI. Mixining in a few prospect websites or a baseball America might do the trick, although I shouldn’t talk, I picked the immortal Jose Martinez in this round, but hey at least he has “upside”.
Still Could Make it- Wilmer Flores- I was gearing up to take Flores with my last pick in the 5th round. At that point he was like the Met’s 17th ranked prospect so I figured no one else would know who he was, but who was I kidding, Uustal scooped him a few picks before I could. Flores went from being way out of the Met’s rankings to a top 3 Met’s prospect and a legitimate prospect overall. He’s still very young (18) and has the potential to be a big time player once he fills out and matures a bit. Looks like Uustals got another top prospect on his hands, what else is new?
% in the Majors- 3 out of 12, and no one that’s done anything good
